2009 models require a software update to the CIC in order to update over USB (which is why BMW notes with 2009 models require a dealership trip for the update). Most 2009 owners I have worked with (since I can generate FSC codes) have been able to complain to their dealership about a few known iDrive bugs (like the shopping cart bug) and get their software updated under warranty and then get the ability to update via USB as a side effect.
