1895 Chilean Mauser Bolt
During World War II, the Mauser factory in Oberndorf was strategically bombed by the Allies, resulting in the deaths of 26 workers and the destruction of the company's power plant. French forces entered Oberndorf (which they subsequently occupied for some time) on 20 April 1945 when the town's and surrendered without any resistance; no blood was shed there on that day. Mauser K98K with 8×57mm rounds. After the war in Europe, the factory was briefly put back in order to produce weapons for the now under-equipped and exhausted French military. The plant was dismantled by the occupying forces for the purpose of, most factory buildings (approximately 60% in total) were demolished and the records destroyed on orders of the local French Army commander. For a number of years, Mauser Werke manufactured precision measurement instruments and tools, such as.,, and, former Mauser engineers, saved what they could and founded, which has since become Germany's main small-arms manufacturer.

98 on April 5, 1898. This remains by far the most successful of the Mauser designs, helped by the onset of two world wars that demanded vast numbers of rifles. Noticeable changes from previous Mauser rifle models included better ruptured case gas venting, better receiver metallurgy, and a larger 35.8 mm (1.41 in) diameter receiver ring compared to previous Mauser 'small ring' bolt action designs that had 33 mm (1.30 in) diameter receiver rings for additional strength and safety. Mauser incorporated a third 'safety' lug on the bolt body to protect the shooter in the event that one or more of the forward locking lugs failed. In 1903 the 7.92×57mm Mauser S Patrone 'spitzer' (pointed) round was introduced. This was in response to the French adoption of a pointed and boat-tail bullet, which offered better ballistic performance. The bullet diameter was increased from 8.08 mm (0.318 in) to 8.2 mm (0.323 in).
Some self-loading pistols were also offered, such as the. • Model 66 • Model 66 S • Model 66 P 1970s–1990 [ ].
The Model 1895 brought to the “Transvaal” was also known as 'Boer Model' Mauser and were marked “O.V.S” (Oranje Vrij Staat) just above the serial number accompanied by MOD.MAUSER and the date of the manufacturer. Due to this, a misunderstanding occurred regarding the identification between the Model 1896 and Model 1897. At the time, an Afrikaans farmer (Also known as a Boer) could purchase a Mauser Model 1895 at a price of £3, another variant known in Afrikaans as was sold slightly above cost by the respective governments and private dealers for sport and private use. These rifles varied in strock style, barrel, sight lines and ornamentation. Some of the last rifles delivered by DWM were equipped with turned down bolt handles which made them suitable for the South African farmers on horseback. Work on the manufacturing of the Mauser Model 1895 was halted in 1899 by the.

The stretched numbers are a tell-tale sign. It appears based on the condition of/marks behind the front sight that there was once something directly behind the front sight. At the end of the day, though, I'm back to the fact that everything adds up to a long rifle. The bolt definitely was formerly straight. The stock has no sling swivel on the left butt or a side plate in the right butt, and it is really hard to believe that someone took a short rifle, removed the barreled action from the stock, and put it in a sporterized long rifle stock. If it shoots well, shoot the crap out of it and have fun.

Pitting below the stocks is very common. The 7x57mm load they are chambered for is NOT the one on the shelf currently, they're designed for about 40K PSI and wafting about a 175 gr. RN bullet at 2100 fps or so. If you load for that pressure, it's probably safe, if there's no obvious damage or missing parts. It's contemporary with the.30-40 Krag and was loaded to about the same pressures and ballistics. Older small ring Mausers weren't designed for today's high pressure loads, attempts to hot rod them will result in increased headspace, stretched and/or separated cases and maybe worse damage to the rifle or the shooter, see above about gas handling. The attractive feature of these old Mausers is the freedom from having to go through a dealer, being antiques.
Just don't expect anything BUT an antique. For about $100 more, you can get a modern rifle that will handle loads with modern ballistics.
I appreciate the feedback and thoughts. Just hadn't seen one like this. Perhaps 'Bubba'd', but you can't get a rifle that you can take down good sized game for $100-$150 (perhaps with the exception of a Mosin and that would be a good deal nowadays). But, what do I know? Not as safe as a '98 Mauser action, but still a strong action for it's time and safe with the ammo intended for it. Not all are antique, some marked DWM instead of the earlier Loewe were made after 12/31/98. It's a Mauser. I note that Federal's 175gr load runs 2390fps, which is noticeably brisker than the original military load intended for this rifle.
